    Canada Re-classifies Crystal Meth

Non-medical drug use is one of the greatest social challenges of the 21st century. Literally thousands of lives have been shattered by the use of these addicting drugs.

In Western Canada, particularly on the west coast, use of drugs has almost been a way of life. In earlier era's, heroine, and more recently, cocaine have been the drugs causing the difficulties.

Of course, today, the west coast is the North American headquarters for pot (mariijuana).

One drug that has been of huge concern amoung young people in the recent era is something known as crystal meth - a designer cocktail of ephedrine derivatives that acts as a stimulant (an aphetamine). These drugs have often been trafficked at young people's dance parties, something known as "Raves".

While Raves don't seem quite as popular as they were a few years ago, growth of crystal meth use continues to be a big concern. This past week in Canada, the government re-scheduled crystal-meth to Schedule I of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, meaning that the maximum penalties can be applied to people trafficking the drug.

Over the past week in Canada, much has been made of the fact that enforcement penalties are not the only aspect of concern in curtailing this growth of drug use. Such topics as restricting the raw material supplies to make crystal meth, and the root social causes of drug use, have all been covered.

All of these points are valid, and like anything else, only a multi-faceted approach covering all these issues will make an impact on this huge and devastating social problem.

The CBC coverage of crystal meth is here, and note the FAQ about crystal meth, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the drug.
